This webpage was created to help internet users wanting to remove WinFixer adware and pop-ups from their PCs. WinFixer was most prevalent during 2005 and 2006, but has since been replaced by a multitude of other unethical computer programs designed to scare computer users into buying some phony security program. These programs include My Security Shield, Security Tool, Defense Center etc.
WinFixer popups are caused by a hidden program installed on the affected PC. WinFixer installs itself without your knowledge and permission when visiting certain websites, or it may be packaged with freeware. It displays deceptive pop-up ads that have the appearance of system alert messages which are unassociated with any software, and prompts you to purchase WinFixer to fix a reported system problem e.g. "Notice: If your computer has errors in the registry database or file system, it could cause unpreditable or erratic behavior, freezes and crashes...." [screenshot]. These "fake alert message" pop-up ads are actually being generated by the hidden WinFixer adware installed on your PC. To stop WinFixer pop-ups, the adware program that's generating them needs to be removed your PC.
To remove WinFixer and its pop-ups it's worthwhile starting with your Control Panel Add/Remove Programs utility as some variants may be removed from there. Look for WinFixer in the list of installed programs and follow the prompts to remove it. Then scan your system with a good anti-spyware program such as Spyware Doctor by PC Tools or Malwarebytes' Anti-malware to make sure it's completely removed from your system and incapable of re-installing itself. If all its components are not completely removed it may automatically re-install itself at some later time or the next time your reboot your system.
If you can't find WinFixer in the list of installed programs then you can use Spyware Doctor to safely uninstall WinFixer and all of its hidden adware components. Spyware Doctor requires paid registration to enable deletions, however it is a reputable program and has a 100% guarantee. Malwarebytes has a good reputation for rogueware removal and does not require registration to enable deletions:
Scan your PC with Spyware Doctor or Malwarebyes Anti-malware removing any infections.
Reboot your PC.
Scan again to ensure WinFixer has been completely removed.
To prevent future infections by WinFixer or other rogue programs be aware that freeware programs often bundle adware programs with them. Always read the terms and conditions to find out exactly what software you're loading onto your machine. To block drive-by-downloads when visiting bad websites, make sure you have the latest Windows patches, use an up-to-date anti-spyware program that has real time protection and configure your system so that programs cannot install without your knowledge or permission:
Go to Tools → Internet Options and select Advanced. Uncheck 'Enable Install On Demand' and 'Allow Software To Run or Install'.
Go to Security tab → Internet → Custom level. Set 'Download Unsigned Controls' and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to Disable. Set 'Download Signed Controls' to Prompt.
